Thankful

December 11th, 2007 at 12:54 am

I am so thankful to all the wonderful people on these forums who gave me great advice and were so nice when I was in serious trouble a while back. DH and I ended up getting some food from the food bank and were able to make it off of that until I got paid again. Things are much better now. Still trying to save money, as always, but definitely no longer in such a dire situation. I am moving at the beginning of next month, to go back to school. I ended up withdrawing from the semester a few months ago, because I needed to work more because we needed the money. I think it was stupid of me now, because I wasted the hours I had already spent in class that semester. Oh well. I am starting back at a better, less expensive school in January. The holidays have been hard though. My workplace has cut everyone's hours drastically. However, a lot of people quit recently, so I have been getting overtime every week. I stayed 30 minutes late the past 2 nights. Next week I am getting 11 extra hours to help make up for being understaffed! That will help for sure. My paycheck this week is going to be great, as we are getting our bonus! Mine is a little over $200, which is wonderful. I feel so blessed this year that I picked a child off the Salvation Army's Angel Tree and bought him his "dream gift" which was a skateboard, along with a helmet, elbow/knee/wrist pads, and some nice shoes. I got my discount on everything, but dh bought the shoes online at a discount site. Anyway, it's time for bed.

If you can possibly fit more work in, be sure and check on campus. Sometimes there are on campus jobs available for students only. They usually pay very little, but sometimes it works out well because you are already on campus, so no need for transportation. Sometimes they are jobs where you just need to do something like watch over a help-desk and there can be downtime during which you can get some of your class reading done. Or some jobs might actually relate to your major, giving you some experience and resume material. The hours you are needed may be very few, thus able to fit in with your studies and your overtime at your regular job.---Just something to check out.

I actually served food in a campus cafeteria the first time I tried to go to college. It was only about one hour per day! That gave me a meal 5 times a week, and while others were complaining about the quality of food, I said nothing, as I just really needed the food! I was paid for about 5 hours of work a week at minimum wage.

Someone else I knew was a campus currier. His job was to pick up books, journals, maps, letters, and small items and deliver them across campus to offices where they were needed. He was paid for a set number of hours, but in reality he could almost always time his work to fit in on his way across campus to attend classes.

Anyway, keep those little campus jobs in mind.
